How long does an awning last?
Today's fabrics are generally warranted from five to ten years. With proper maintenance and care, they can last even longer. Moreover, when properly built using high quality materials, your frames can last a lifetime.

Generally speaking, the darker the color chosen, the more of the suns rays will be absorbed.

Are awnings waterproof? Can I stay out under my awning in inclement weather?
In the past, most fabrics were not waterproof but rather mostly water repellent. The fabrics of today can be considered waterproof with the exception of standard acrylic fabrics, which are very water resistant. Fixed awnings will protect you from inclement weather. With the addition of motorized drop curtains, you will be able to enjoy your added living space year round, no matter the weather outside.

What are awning frames made from? How durable are they?
Almost every awning frame is made from steel or aluminum pipe/tubing.

How long does it take to build once I place an order?
As with any custom-manufactured product, there is a short lead time for quality work to be accomplished. For canvas awnings, this can mean as little as three weeks. Of course, this varies depending on the time of the year, and it is not unusual for this lead time to run longer, especially in seasonal climates.

If there are no poles on the retractable awning, what supports the unit?
Retractable awnings have been designed to be self-supporting. This style of awning relies on secure mounting in conjunction with spring-loaded arms. The arm tension is created with internal springs, and large radius elbows keep the fabric tight by applying outward force.

Why would I want my retractable awning motorized?
Nothing could be more convenient than simply flipping a switch and watching your awning roll out on its own. Once fully extended or retracted, the unit will stop automatically. You may also stop the retractable in any position with the wall-mounted switch. Research has shown that a motorized awning is used four times as much as a manual unit. Don't believe it? Consider how few times you would change the TV channel if you didn't have a remote control.

What are the differences between retractable and fixed-frame awnings?

The differences reflect style and function. The great advantage of retractable awnings is "shade on demand." You use the awning when you need it for sun protection; otherwise it remains re-tracted. Another big advantage of retractables is the minimal annual maintenance. Possible disadvantages include higher initial cost and limited function (wind and rain can damage this type of awning, which must be retracted in inclement weather).

The big advantage of fixed-frame awnings is that they protect against all kinds of weather. They also can be configured to form a kind of ourdoor "room." However, they require annual maintenance (including removal in the fall and re-installation in spring), and they are always "there" for constant, uninterrupted shade.
